Global Payments Inc., a leading provider of payment technology and software, recently released their fifth annual report assessing the impact of AI and centrality of payments technologies in business operations. The 2025 report, based on expert interviews and a survey of 600 payment decision-makers, explores the impact of AI and the central role of payment technologies in modern business operations.

“Our 2025 report evaluates everything from the transformative potential of AI and biometrics to the technological requirements of social commerce. The insights in this report underscore Global Payments’ commitment to understanding the trends influencing global commerce and continuing to drive innovation for our customers,” said Cameron Bready, chief executive officer of Global Payments, in a recent press release. “The businesses that drive our economy are experiencing a shift in how they use technology to connect with and better serve their customers. Payment technologies increasingly sit at the center of business operations, and mastering them is critical to success for companies of all sizes.”

The report identifies six key trends reshaping the commerce landscape:

  1. AI Delivers Early Wins: AI is evolving from a theoretical tool to a transformative force in customer service, marketing, and fraud prevention. While data privacy remains a concern, the potential for AI-driven success is significant.
  2. Unifying the Back End of Commerce: As more consumers shop online, businesses are integrating their operations into unified platforms to create seamless experiences for customers, regardless of where they start or end their purchase journey. SMBs (67%) and midmarket companies (71%) are investing more in these platforms compared to larger enterprises.
  3. Embedded Payments in B2B: Just as embedded payments have transformed consumer experiences, they are now being integrated into B2B transactions, helping streamline business operations and supply chains.
  4. New Tools for Digital Security and Fraud Prevention: As identity theft becomes more sophisticated, businesses are adopting biometrics, tokenization, and other advanced security measures to protect transactions and enhance consumer trust.
  5. POS as a ‘Place of Service’: Modern POS systems are evolving into comprehensive business tools, enabling merchants to manage loyalty programs, marketing campaigns, and customer journeys in one POS package. AI will become a proactive partner in business management.
  6. Payment Orchestration Matures: Payment orchestration technologies are becoming essential for improving customer experience, accessibility, security, fraud prevention, and operational efficiency.
